Purpose:
Players practice passing and receiving the puck as well as stickhandling and shooting in this multiple stage drill.
Setup:
Players form a line in the corner. A cone is placed on the near blue line about 3-4 feet from the boards. A coach sets up at center ice.
How it Works:
- Coach blows his whistle or says “Go” to start.
- The first player in line skates to the cone and passes the puck to himself off the boards.
- Player then passes the puck to the coach at center ice.
- Coach passes the puck back to the player, who receives it, sets up and shoot at the goal.
Coaching Tips:
- You can add a goalie to increase difficulty.
- You can also place a second cone at center ice and have the player pass off the boards at that cone as well.
Tips for Younger Athletes:
- Emphasize the importance of controlling the puck immediately after it rebounds off the boards, focusing on soft hands to smoothly transition into the next move.
- Practice basic passing techniques, ensuring they push the puck towards the target with accuracy and control, rather than slapping at it.
- Encourage them to keep their heads up while skating to the cone, passing, and shooting, to develop awareness of their surroundings and potential game situations.
Tips for Older Athletes:
- Integrate puck protection techniques as they approach and depart from the cone, simulating a defender’s pressure and teaching them to shield the puck effectively.
- Focus on the precision and timing of the give-and-go with the coach, emphasizing quick puck release and reception to mimic fast-paced game situations.
- Incorporate shooting accuracy drills, challenging players to aim for specific areas of the goal, enhancing their ability to score under pressure.
