Purpose:
Players learn how to work together to fake out a defender.
Setup:
This drill requires two Attackers, a Defender, and a goalie. The drill starts with Attacker 1 near center ice, skating toward the Defender and the goal. Attacker 2 is on the outside, skating near the boards as backup.

How It Works:
- As Attacker 1 nears the Defender, he goes into a toe drag, keeping the puck on the forehand. He uses the toe drag to push the puck over across the Defender’s body, as if he is going to pass to Attacker 2.
- Attacker 2 meanwhile skates in closer, as if to receive the pass. His stick should be outstretched and to the right, in order to fake that he will be reaching to receive the puck and pull it in to himself.
- As the Defender moves to his right in order to intercept the “pass,” Attacker 1 pulls the puck back over to himself and darts around the Defender, who is now out of the way.
- Attacker 2 joins Attacker 1 as they break for the net and take a shot. If the shot does not go in, both Attackers 1 and 2 should attempt to get the rebound before the Defender recovers and makes it to the net.
- Run the drill for 8-12 minutes.
Coaching Tips:
- This drill should be done several times in each position. The Defenders should be instructed
to allow the Attacker to get by him a few times and to try to intercept him a few times, as if he was not fooled by the fake. This will give the Attackers a chance to see what will happen if their fake is unsuccessful.
