Purpose:
This drill is specifically designed to give defensemen a chance to practice their shooting and puck receiving skills.
Setup:
Several players on the red line, a defenseman on the blue line, and a goalie guarding the net. You will also need several pucks.

How It Works:
- The defenseman starts by skating backwards on the blue line, starting at the right boards. As he skates into the middle, the players lined up on the red line pass to the defenseman.
- As the defenseman receives the puck, he immediately takes a shot. The goalie attempts to deflect the shot.
- There should be three players on the red line, so the defenseman will receive and shoot the puck three times.
- Run the drill for 8-12 minutes.
Coaching Tips:
- The trick to this drill, as with many passing drills, is for the players to pass to where the defenseman will be, not where he currently is.
- This drill can be modified in several ways to make it more difficult. Try these variations:- Add a forward to make the defenseman’s shot more difficult- Place the defenseman who just shot in front of the goal to help the goalie- Shorten the distance of the passers, making the passes come in quick succession and from longer distances
- Focus on the technique of the shot, ensuring the defenseman transfers their weight effectively for a powerful, accurate shot.
- Emphasize the importance of soft hands when receiving the puck. Defensemen should aim to receive and control the puck smoothly to set up for a quick shot.
- Stress the importance of smooth backward skating and proper positioning on the blue line. Defensemen should maintain their balance and readiness to receive the pass and take the shot.
For Younger Athletes:
- For younger players, emphasize basic stick handling and puck control skills before focusing on the shot.
- Simplify the passing aspect of the drill. The passes should be more direct and easier to receive, allowing young players to focus more on their shooting technique.
- Provide constant encouragement and feedback, focusing on the positives while gently correcting technique.
For Older Athletes:
- Introduce and practice different types of shots, such as slap shots, wrist shots, and snap shots, to give older players a variety of tools.
- For older, more experienced players, increase the complexity of the drill by adding elements like moving targets or defensive obstacles.
- Incorporate scenarios that mimic game situations, like shooting under pressure or adjusting to a rapidly changing puck position.
