Purpose:

Players work on getting a quick shot on the power play.

Setup:

Two forwards take the ice, one below the goal line, one above it.

How it Works:

  • Forward 1 Passes the puck to Forward 2
  • Forward to then shares out from behind the goal line and shots
  • Forward 1 crashes the net to screen for the shooter and also try for a tip in.
  • Run the drill for 4-6 minutes.

Coaching Tips:

When at the net, Forward 1 should have his stick on the ice so that the blade is available to tip and angle the puck to the goal, or to tap in a rebound.

For Younger Athletes:

  • Emphasize spacing and movement to ensure both forwards don’t crowd the net. Teach them to find open ice while being aware of defensive players and positioning themselves strategically.
  • Encourage Forward 1 to focus on timing their movements to the net, arriving just as the shot is taken to effectively screen the goaltender and position themselves for a rebound or deflection.
  • Stress the importance of keeping their heads up to see the play develop and being aware of the goalie and defender’s positions before making decisions.

For Older Athletes:

  • Emphasize body positioning for Forward 1 to shield the goalie’s vision effectively while avoiding penalties. Proper balance and strength are crucial to maintaining this position.
  • Reinforce the concept of quick and accurate passing for Forward 2 to create scoring opportunities. They should be able to deliver a quick pass with precision, anticipating where Forward 1 will be.
  • Focus on variations in shot selection to keep the goalie guessing. Forward 2 should practice a range of shots like one-timers, wrist shots, or slap shots from different angles to add unpredictability.
