Purpose:

Players work on defending against a power play.

Setup:

Two players line up in the faceoff circle. Coach or another player stand nearby.

How it Works:

  • Coach or another player drop the puck and the two players battle against each other to win the faceoff.
  • You can either run the faceoff five times and switch or you can have the losing player replaced by the puck dropper or a player watching.
  • Run the drill for 5-10 minutes.

Coaching Tips:

All forwards should practice taking faceoffs because the centers who usually take faceoffs during games can be removed by the referee.

Tips for Younger Athletes:

  • Encourage younger players to focus on their stance, ensuring they stay low with knees bent and weight evenly distributed for better balance and leverage.
  • Remind them to watch the puck closely and react quickly to the drop, emphasizing the importance of timing and anticipation.
  • Teach them to use their body effectively by leaning in and using their strength to gain position against their opponent.

Tips for Older Athletes:

  • For older players, emphasize the importance of hand-eye coordination and quick reflexes. Practice snapping the stick down immediately as the puck drops.
  • Instruct experienced players to develop multiple faceoff strategies, such as tying up the opponent’s stick or using a quick sweep to control the puck.
  • Encourage older athletes to study their opponents’ tendencies and adjust their approach accordingly, enhancing their tactical understanding of faceoffs.
