Purpose:
Players practice passing to a teammate breaking through the neutral zone. The breaking player works on receiving the puck on the move and transitioning into a breakaway situation.

Setup:
Players form a line in the defensive zone.
How It Works:
- A coach blows the whistle or says “Go” to start.
- The first player in line breaks toward center ice, skating around the center ice circle.
- The second player in line passes the puck to the first player when they are back facing the blue line.
- The first player receives the pass and takes a breakaway shot on the goalie.
- The second player then breaks, goes around the circle, and the third player makes the pass.
- This continues through the entire line.
Coaching Tips:
- Run the drill in both directions to balance turning and crossover skills.
- Add a coach at the blue line for a pass-return (give-and-go) option, allowing players to practice quick puck exchanges.
- Emphasize timing of the pass to ensure the breaking player receives it smoothly without stopping their momentum.
Tips for Younger Athletes:
- Focus on getting comfortable receiving the puck in motion. Remind younger players to keep their sticks on the ice and eyes on the puck as it approaches.
- Encourage younger players to take their time on the breakaway and make controlled decisions. Help them understand the importance of accuracy over speed when shooting.
- Remind younger players to maintain good balance, especially around the turns, and use proper crossovers to stay stable and in control.
Tips for Older Athletes:
- Challenge older players to work on accelerating into the breakout pass, emphasizing the transition from defense to offense. This will improve their ability to receive the puck at high speeds.
- Encourage experienced players to use deceptive body movements when approaching the goalie, making it harder for the goalie to predict the shot.
- Reinforce the importance of crisp, accurate passes. Older players should focus on leading the breakout player with their pass, ensuring the puck is received in stride without breaking momentum.
