Purpose:

Five offensive players against four defenders.

Setup:

Players work on defending against a power play.

How It Works:

  • Defensive players form a box when offense has two defensemen at the blue line.
  • Defensive players form a diamond when only one defenseman is at the blue line.
  • Have the offensive players pass the puck around, forcing the defensive players to move.
  • Run the drill for 1-2 minutes.

Coaching Tips:

  • In this drill, you can have the offensive players pass the puck around without shooting, require them to pass a certain number of times before shooting, or let them shoot as soon as a shot is available.

Tips for Younger Athletes:

  • Focus on the basics of maintaining proper positioning within the box or diamond formation.
  • Teach them to keep their sticks active and in passing lanes to disrupt the offense’s flow.
  • Encourage them to communicate loudly and clearly with each other to coordinate movements and coverages.

Tips for Older Athletes:

  • Emphasize quick decision-making and anticipation of offensive plays to effectively disrupt power plays.
  • Practice aggressive but controlled stick checks and body positioning to regain puck possession.
  • Work on transitioning quickly from defense to offense, focusing on fast break opportunities after gaining puck control.
