Purpose:
This drill trains defensemen to pick up the puck behind the net and pass it behind them, altering the usual breakout pattern.
Setup:
The coach is positioned at center ice with several pucks. Two defensemen are in the neutral zone near the boards on each side. Optionally, include a goalie. Position two forwards at the boards next to the circles at the same end.

How It Works:
- The coach shoots the puck wide of the net, sending it around the boards, behind the goalie. A defenseman skates to retrieve it.
- As the defenseman controls the puck, the other defenseman calls for a reverse. The puck carrier should then be near the opposite side of the net.
- The puck carrier passes behind him to the second defenseman, who immediately passes to the nearest forward.
- The forward then passes back to the defenseman who initially passed to him. This defenseman then pushes up the ice near the coach.
- The goalie’s role is to learn communication with the defensemen and can call for a reverse if needed.
- Run the drill for 8-12 minutes.
Coaching Tips:
- Emphasize strong communication between defensemen.
- This drill is challenging for young athletes and requires repeated practice and a focus on timing.
Tips for Younger Athletes:
- Focus on basic stick handling: Young players should concentrate on controlling the puck smoothly as they skate behind the net.
- Practice looking up before passing: Encourage them to develop the habit of looking up and identifying their passing target before making the pass.
- Simplify communication: Teach simple, clear communication cues for calling reverses, making it easier for them to understand and execute the play.
Tips for Older Athletes:
- Work on quick pivoting: Older players should practice pivoting quickly to efficiently collect and pass the puck while maintaining speed.
- Develop spatial awareness: Encourage them to be aware of their positioning relative to the other players and the puck for effective execution of the reverse breakout.
- Integrate deceptive maneuvers: Teach them to use shoulder checks and deceptive body movements to mislead opponents about their intended play.
