Purpose:
This drill helps players improve their ability to complete both long and short passes while on the move. It also builds timing, anticipation, and accuracy in various passing scenarios.

Setup:

  1. Players form two lines at opposite ends of the goal line.
  2. One line is equipped with pucks.

How It Works:

  1. A coach blows the whistle or says “Go” to start the drill.
  2. The first two players in line skate up the ice along the boards, passing the puck back and forth.
    • Focus on making long passes that allow the receiving player to continue skating in stride.
  3. At the far blue line, the players begin angling toward the goal, making progressively shorter passes to one another.
  4. The drill ends for the pair when they reach the net. The next pair then begins the drill.
  5. Continue running the drill until all players have participated 1-2 times.
  6. For advanced progression, add a goalie and have players attempt to score once they reach the net.

Coaching Tips:

  • On long passes, players should aim to place the puck in front of their teammate to enable smooth reception in stride.
  • As the players angle in and the passing distance shortens, emphasize quicker passes and anticipation of their partner’s movement.
  • Focus on clean, controlled passes to build accuracy and timing.
  • To challenge more advanced players, incorporate a goalie and encourage them to coordinate a final pass-and-shoot sequence.

Coaching Tips for Younger Athletes:

  • Remind players to keep their heads up to track their teammate’s position when passing.
  • Use visual demonstrations to show how long and short passes differ in terms of force and timing.
  • Encourage players to communicate with their partner by calling for the puck or signaling readiness.

Coaching Tips for Older Athletes:

  • Emphasize precision by challenging players to hit their partner’s stick blade with every pass.
  • Teach players to adjust their speed and stance as they transition from long to short passes for better control.
  • Encourage quick decision-making as they angle toward the goal to simulate in-game pressure.
